This study evaluated the knowledge, attitude and preventive practices towards anemia among women attending ANC in Udi LGA, Enugu State. Anemia is one of the most common nutritional deficiency disorders affecting pregnant women in developing countries, including Nigeria. Anemia during pregnancy is commonly associated with poor pregnancy outcomes and can result in complications that threaten the life of both the mother and fetus. Specific objectives of this study are; to determine the knowledge level of women attending ANC in selected clinics in Udi LGA on anemia, to determine the attitude towards anemia among women attending ANC clinic and to evaluate the knowledge level on preventive measures against anemia among women attending ANC in Udi LGA. A questionnaire-based study was implored to obtain direct information from the respondents and a total of three hundred and eighty-seven (387) respondents were captured. The mean age of the respondents is 32 years. Those between the ages of 26-30 and 31-35 are the highest in number with the frequency of 100 (25.83). Majority of the respondents 159 (46.08) had tertiary education. The results showed that most of the respondents (74.0%) had a good knowledge of anemia in pregnancy. About, 19.2% had an average level of knowledge while 6.8% had a poor knowledge of anemia in pregnancy. It also showed that (59.5%) had a right or excellent attitude towards anemia in pregnancy. About, 27.7% had an average or fair attitude. More so, (75.7%) had an excellent preventive measure towards anemia during pregnancy. Therefore, this study shows that the majority of the respondents have good knowledge, the right attitude and preventive measures towards anemia during pregnancy. Thus more effort is encouraged in sensitization of the public.

Background/Aims In Ghana, anaemia in pregnancy is a major public health problem. As part of the Central Regional Health Directorate's mandate to address determinants of anaemia among pregnant women, this study aimed to assess the prevalence of anaemia and factors that influence its occurrence in Central Region. Methods This cross-sectional study involved 391 pregnant women aged 15–45 years old at ≥36 weeks' gestation from 12 randomly selected district hospitals and polyclinics in the Central Region. Data on their anaemia status and sociodemographic characteristics were collected between May and June 2022. Univariate and multivariate regression analyses were used to explore the relationship between anaemia and influencing factors. Results Overall, 47.1% of participants had anaemia, which was significantly associated with age (χ2=10.3, P=0.036). In multivariate analysis, pregnant women aged 21–25 years were significantly less likely (adjusted odds ratio=0.32, P=0.017) to experience anaemia compared to younger women. Conclusions Anaemia among pregnant women in the Central Region of Ghana is high, and age is a significant influencing factor. Several steps can be taken to lower the prevalence of anaemia, beginning with continuous public education on the importance of early antenatal care and nutrition during pregnancy. Other behaviours that may improve haemoglobin concentration include abstaining from alcoholic beverages and traditional herbal medicines, eating nutritious meals, increasing prophylaxis against malaria and intestinal worms and ensuring HIV-infected women are taking antivirals. Implications for practice The high prevalence of anaemia poses a major public health challenge, necessitating urgent coordinated efforts and resource allocation. Collaborative initiatives across sectors are vital for enhancing access to iron-rich foods and health services. A strong data system is essential for informed policymaking and implementing evidence-based strategies.

Perinatal Outcomes of High Risk Pregnancies: Experience of a Tertiary Care Hospital

High Risk Pregnancy (HRP) denotes a condition where the mother, the fetus, or both are predisposed to complications during the gestation period, at birth, or postnatally, which is affected by several factors. Objective: To analyze the perinatal outcomes of high-risk pregnancies, focusing on the experience of a tertiary care hospital. Methods: A longitudinal study over two years, from October 1, 2020, to December 31, 2022, was conducted on 213 high-risk pregnant women, via purposive sampling, who attended the antenatal clinic Liaquat University Hospital, Hyderabad and Jamshoro. After obtaining informed written consent, interviews were conducted with the participants to collect data about their sociodemographic, obstetric, and gynecological histories. Perinatal outcomes were evaluated on the 8th day post-delivery, during which details concerning maternal and fetal complications in terms of morbidity and mortality, were documented. Results: Rh-negative pregnancy was found to be the most high-risk factor with 24.4% (52) of the cases, followed by teenage pregnancy at 12.2% (26), and short stature at 10.9% (23). Additionally, severe anemia was found in 21 women (9.8%), Pregnancy Induced Hypertension (PIH) in 18 women (8.6%), and obesity was also seen in 18 women (8.6%). Other noted risk factors included grand multigravida in 13 women (6.1%), thyroid disorder 4.9% (10), twin pregnancy 3.7% (8) and congenital fetal anomaly, polyhydramnios, oligohydramnios each with 2.4% (5). Conclusions: This study significantly contributes to the body of knowledge on high-risk pregnancies and their outcomes.
