Prevalance of proteinuria in Mexico: A conjunctive consolidation approach with other cardiovascular risk factors: The Mexican Health Survey 2000

Abstract: Proteinuria is prevalent. When considered together, dipstick-positive proteinuria, blood pressure level, body mass index > or =30 m(2)/kg, and abnormal fasting blood glucose measured on a single occasion identifies different segments of the population. Studies such as this may be a suitable initial clinical approach to general population screening for renal and cardiovascular risk stratification.

“…Our result of 0.9% for proteinuria (cutoff at ≥1+) was within the range described in other international studies: Singapore 0.8% [10], NHANES III 1.1% [3], Bolivia 2.1% [12], AusDiab 2.4% [8], Hong Kong 3.2% [11], Okinawa 5.3% [9], and Mexico 9.2% [22]. The result of 0.3%, obtained with a ≥2+ cutoff, was substantially lower.…”

“…Screening programs for CKD in healthy adults have been performed in several countries, including Mexico [5,6]; however, there is little information on such programs performed among children living in developing countries [3]. The screening of children may provide an early opportunity for identification of risk factors and, ultimately, prevention of CKD in adulthood [7,8].…”

“…[46] Another risk factor, proteinuria, is present in 9.1% of the population, and as expected, it is highly prevalent among subjects with DM and HTN. [11,30,40] Finally, 24% of the population uses tobacco regularly, [1] and the habit is more prevalent among diabetics. [12] Cigarette smoking has been identified as a strong predictor of cardiovascular disease, both in diabetic and non-diabetic populations.…”

“…Finally, while the prevalence of proteinuria in nonhypertensive diabetics was 9.3%, it increased to 19.6% in those with hypertension. [11,30,40] Additionally, 56% of diabetic subjects had microalbuminuria. Subjects diagnosed with diabetes for at least ten years had an increased likelihood of a positive test (OR 1.25).…”
