Introduction: Chronic skin diseases including vitiligo could have profound psychological burden. The factors influencing the expression of depression in patients with vitiligo received little attention both nationally and internationally. Aim: The aim of the current study was to estimate the burden and severity of depression and to characterize their associated sociodemographic and clinical characteristics among patients with vitiligo. Methods: A cross-sectional survey study was conducted among patients with vitiligo of both genders attending dermatology outpatient clinics at a tertiary care hospital during 2019. Modified Beck Depression Inventory Scale was used for screening for depression. Results: A total 308 patients with vitiligo have been included in the current analysis. The average age was 27±14.5 years. Approximately 59.7% of the patients were males and the majority (63.6%) were single. A total 168 (54.5%) patients had some depressive symptoms. The majority of these patients had mild depression (52.4%), followed by moderate (33.3%) and severe (14.3%) depression. Moderate and/or severe depression were significantly higher among children and adolescents (p=0.036), single patients (p=0.006), those with lower than high school education (p<0.001), those with shorter duration of the disease (p<0.001), and those using phototherapy (p=0.003). Depression burden and severity were not significantly associated with gender and lesion distribution. Conclusion: Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics can easily characterize the risk of depression among patients with vitiligo. The current findings may help dermatologist to pick patients at higher risk of depression early after diagnosis of vitiligo. Dermatologists should have low threshold for referring such patients to psychiatry clinics.

Association between Alexithymia and Depression among King Khalid University Medical Students: An Analytical Cross-Sectional Study

Alexithymia is a condition in which a person is unable to explain his/her emotions, bodily sensations, or discuss sentiments. This study aims to determine the prevalence of alexithymia and its relationships with socio-demographics and depression among medical students. A cross-sectional survey was conducted among medical students at King Khalid University (KKU), Saudi Arabia. A stratified random sampling technique was utilized for data collection using the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) and the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9). A multiple logistic regression model was used to identify the factors associated with alexithymia. A total of 333 students participated in this study, almost two-thirds (64.6%) were from clinical years, and 51.4% were females. The prevalence of alexithymia and depression was 47.4% and 88.9%, respectively. Regression analysis showed females had a doubled risk (OR = 2.09), and students with high-income status showed less probability of having alexithymia (OR = 0.39), whereas people with chronic health problems showed a doubled risk for alexithymia (OR = 2.04). Moreover, depression was significantly associated with alexithymia (OR = 1.91). Our study revealed that the prevalence of alexithymia was high along with depression among studied samples. This raises attention towards finding measures to reduce it for the better performance of students and to avoid psychological problems in the future.

Introduction. Depressive disorders are the leading causes of disability and disease burden worldwide. They were ranked fifth among the top causes of death and disability in Saudi Arabia, with subsequent impacts on productivity and economics when affecting adults. Objectives. The study aimed to systematically investigate the prevalence of depression and its associated factors among Saudi adults during 2000-2022. Methods. A systematic review and meta-analysis were conducted in accordance with the PRISMA guidelines using Medline/PubMed, ResearchGate, Google Scholar, and Ovid databases during 2000-2022 with predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The quality of the included papers was determined, and heterogeneity between studies was assessed using the Q statistic to estimate the I 2 value. A random effects model was used to drive the pooled depression prevalence with 95% confidence intervals (CI). A forest plot was generated to show estimates for individual studies. Publication bias was assessed visually with the funnel plots symmetry and Egger’s test ( p < 0.05 ). A sensitivity analysis was conducted to explore the effect of individual studies on the overall prevalence estimate. A subgroup analysis by the study, population characteristics, and depression tools were also run. Results. Forty-six cross-sectional relevant studies were identified, including 25814 participants. The pooled depression prevalence was 37.35% (95% CI: 33.61–41.98%) with high heterogeneity ( I 2 = 94.8 %, p < 0.001 ). In the subgroup analysis, the prevalence estimates were higher among females (34.5%), the singles (49.5%), undergraduate university students in university settings (47.7%), northern region (62.3%), and studies that utilized the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression (CES-D) scale (58.8%). Among the risk factors significantly associated with depression were female gender, being single, low education level, financial problems, poor housing condition, having medical problems, sleep disorders, presence of psychiatric/psychological conditions, life events, lack of social support, exposure to stress, educational/personal problems, and smartphone addiction. Conclusion. Almost more than one-third of Saudi adults had depression. Appropriate surveillance, early interventions, and depression management strategies are needed to decrease the prevalence and its consequences among adults.
