Prevalence and Correlates of Overweight and Obesity in 12 European Countries in 2017–2018

Abstract: Introduction: Using data from the TackSHS survey, we aim to provide updated estimates on the prevalence and determinants of overweight and obesity in Europe. Methods: A face-to-face survey was conducted in 2017-2018 in 12 European countries (Bulgaria, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Poland, Portugal, Romania, and Spain). “…This study's demographic reflects broader trends, with a significant proportion of the patients, nearly 65%, living with obesity, with an average BMI of 32.3 ± 5.3 kg/m 2 . Obesity rates have been reported to be higher in Eastern Europe, in particular, with rates reaching or exceeding 20% [28]. Obesity is a significant risk factor that can be influenced to decrease the likelihood of developing DM.…”

“…Considering data from the 2017–2018 TackSHS survey, the estimated overall prevalence of overweight and obesity in Italian adults aged ≥18 years was 44.0%, with overweight prevalence being 36.5% and obesity prevalence 7.5% ( 62 ). Similar prevalences were observed with data from the multiscope survey “Aspects of daily life” of the Italian National Institute of Statistics (ISTAT) conducted in 2015 on a representative sample of nearly 46,000 subjects, from which it emerged that 35.3% of the population had overweight and 9.8% had obesity ( 63 ).…”
