“…Light microscopic screening revealed the presence of Blastocystis in 54.17% of the examined stool samples which have been collected from Alexandria, Egypt. Prevalence of 67.4% and 52% were previously reported in Alexandria in 2016 and 2019, respectively ( Eassa et al, 2016 , Elsayad et al, 2019 ), while in other Egyptian governorates prevalence ranged from 10% up to 53% ( El-Shewy et al, 2002 ; El-Marhoumy et al, 2015 , Farghaly et al, 2017 ). Epidemiological studies in several countries with different sanitation standards, revealed a wide range of Blastocystis prevalence ranging from 0.54% up to 63% ( Beyhan et al, 2015 , Duda et al, 2015 , El Safadi et al, 2016 , Osman et al, 2016 , Ramírez et al, 2016 , Seyer et al, 2017 , Asfaram et al, 2019 , Delshad et al, 2020 , Zanetti et al, 2020 )…”

“…In Shebin El Kom, Menoufia Governorate the prevalence rate among 250 food handlers were 46.6% (Abd El Wahab and Selim, 2007). In Cairo the prevalence rate was 34.5% and it was higher 54.2% in the iron deficiency anemia patients (El Deeb and Tanta City, prevalence rate of B. hominis among preschoolchildren (2-5 years) of both sexes were 53% (El-Marhoumy et al, 2015).…”

“…These results agreed with Dagaci et al (2014) who reported that patients with daily habits such as less hand washing especially before meals (15.9%), more eating outdoors (28.9%) and consumption of tap water (25.1%) were more exposed to B. hominis. A higher prevalence was detected among children aged 4-5 years in a rural area due to bad personal hygiene that facilitate feco-oral transmission, most of those children used unfiltered water (El-Marhoumy et al, 2015). Nithyamathi et al (2016) reported B. hominis prevalence was higher in rural areas 13.7% than the urban ones 7.2%.…”

“…Previous studies in Egypt reported nearly similar high rates of Blastocystis infection. EL-Marhoumy et al [31] stated that Blastocystis was found in 53% of studied preschool children. Eassa et al [32] detected Blastocystis in 54.5% of immunocompromised and 67.4% of immunocompetent individuals.…”
