Prevalence and distribution of HPV genotypes among HIV-infected women in Zambia

Abstract: We screened 145 HIV-infected non-pregnant women at a tertiary care centre in Lusaka, Zambia. Liquid-based cytology and human papillomavirus (HPV) genotyping with PGMY09/11 biotinylated primers (Roche Linear Array s HPV genotyping test) maximised sensitivity of cytology and HPV assessments. Among high-risk (HR) types, HPV 52 (37.2%), 58 (24.1%) and 53 (20.7%) were more common overall than HPV 16 (17.2%) and 18 (13.1%) in women with high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesions or squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) on … Show more

“…It is also of the highest HPV prevalence reported in any study in western Africa (Xi et al, 2003;Wall et al, 2005;Lack et al, 2005) or other parts of sub-Saharan Africa (de Sanjosé et al, 2007;Castellsagué et al, 2008), with the exception of those that included only, or a majority of, HIV-positive women (Sahasrabuddhe et al, 2007). Differences in age and sensitivity of PCR testing methods, however, limit the direct comparability with studies other than the IARC HPV Prevalence Surveys.…”

“…25 Similar studies also carried out in other parts of Africa showed a prevalence of as high as 97.2%. 26 These variations in figures may be attributable to the exhaustive nature of the HPV detection strategy used in the various studies especially those carried out in Asia and America.…”

“…10 The high HIV prevalence could explain the observed HPV genotype distribution, since HIV-infected women are reported to acquire a broader spectrum of HPV genotypes other than HPV 16 or 18. [11][12][13] Most previous studies in South Africa were conducted in low HIV prevalence areas. This finding is epidemiologically important because the existing vaccine may not be as efficacious in this region of South Africa.…”
