Prevalence and dynamics of the etiological structure of leptospirosis in cattle in Ukraine

Abstract: The data present the prevalence of leptospirosis in cattle on the territory of Ukraine over the last eight years (2005-2012) and the dynamics of changes of the etiological structure of the agent. Territorial diffusion of leptospirosis outbreak has also been studied. The outbreaks? density map was completed based on these data, depending on the number of cases in cattle. All areas of the country were divided into risk of infection four zones: low, medium, high and extra high risk.

“…At the same time, there was an increase in the number of positive reactions with the serovars copenhageni, polonica, and kabura. The latter two are the main aetiological factors of leptospirosis in cattle and small ruminants in Ukraine (Ukhovskyi et al 2014). We attribute their increase to the violation of segregation conditions (keeping animals separate).…”

“…Within countries, regional or local estimations of the seroprevalence exhibited great variations, e.g. in Belgium [75,80,85,86,96], France [59,60,[63][64][65][66], Spain [67,71,78], Ukraine [81,92,95] The serogroup diversity is relatively stable over the 20 years (Fig 4). Three serogroups were sporadically reported, namely Cynopteri and Panama in 2018 only [85] and Pyrogenes in 2018 [85] and 2020 [96], even though these serogroups were tested in other studies [59,61,63,66,68,75,81,87,91].…”

“…Leptospirosis is one of the most prevalent antropozoonotic infections in many countries of the world and in particular in Ukraine (Ukhovskyi et al, 2018). To date, there are over 250 leptospira serovars in 26 serogroups (Walker and Srinivas, 2013).…”

“…Animals of different species suffer from leptospirosis: cattle, pigs, horses, sheep, goats, deer, foxes, arctic foxes, mink, dogs, etc. (Pyskun et al, 2018;Stepna et al, 2016;. The most common serovars causing leptospirosis in dogs before the introduction of leptospirosis vaccine 30 years ago were Canicola and Icterohaemorrhagiae.…”
