Prevalence and echo features of mediastinal lymph nodes in EUS for non-malignant indications: a prospective study in a Southern European Population

Abstract: Background and study aims  Significant heterogeneity in geographic distribution regarding the prevalence of mediastinal lymph nodes (MLN) has been documented in autopsy and computed tomography (CT) studies. Awareness of the local prevalence and characteristics of lymph nodes will be relevant when performing endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) for staging of malignant neoplasias. The aims of this study were to document the prevalence and echo features of MLN in patients undergoing EUS for non-malignant extrathorac… Show more

“…The selection of a pathological LN for sampling is difficult as mediastinum is filled with a significant number of normal LNs, which may be as large as 1–2 cm at stations 7, 4R, and 4L. [ 3 ] Unnecessary sampling may be avoided by proper characterization of LNs with gray-scale (B-mode) and color Doppler imaging. The gray-scale imaging can describe the site, size, shape, echotexture, and border of the nodes.…”
