Prevalence and factors associated with exercise-induced bronchospasm among rural school children in Ilesa, Nigeria

Abstract: The prevalence of EIB among rural schoolchildren in Ilesa was 9.2%. EIB was associated with the history of allergies and wheeze and presence of household poultry birds. We recommend routine screening of these children for early diagnosis and good asthma symptom control.

“…In the present study, children in the lower socioeconomic class had the highest frequency of exercise induced bronchospasm, although this difference was not statistically significant. This finding is similar to what was reported by Kuti et al [22] in Nigeria. Other researchers have also reported similar findings [29,31].…”

“…With regards to the demographic characteristics of the respondents, the early adolescents (age 10-13 years) had a significantly higher frequency of EIB than older children. This is similar to the studies of Onazi et al [5] and Kuti et al [22] who both reported a higher prevalence of EIB in the early adolescent age group; 10-14 and 11-13 years respectively. This finding may be explained by the fact that asthma and related disorders have been observed to be commoner during early puberty, and this is particular so in girls; this is because of the changes in level of female hormones during this period [23].…”

“…Table shows the results of the subgroup analyses for the prevalence of EIB in general population of children and adolescents. Seven studies with sample size less than 400 showed a pooled mean prevalence of 15% (95% CI: 11‐19%), compared with 9% (95% CI: 7‐10%) in 12 studies with sample size between 400 and 1000, and 8% (95% CI: 7‐9%) in 14 studies with sample size greater than 1000 ( P < 0.001 for heterogeneity between subgroups). The global mean prevalence of EIB was 8% (95% CI 7‐9%) and 9% (95% CI 8‐10%) in the post hoc sensitivity analyses, excluding seven studies with sample size less than 400 and two studies with “poor” study quality, respectively.…”

“…Table summarizes the characteristics of the 66 included studies. Thirty‐three studies investigated the prevalence of EIB in general population of children and adolescents. Ten studies reported the prevalence of EIB in child and adolescent athletes, and 23 studies in children and adolescents with asthma.…”
