Prevalence and family structures related factors associated with crown trauma in school children resident in suburban Nigeria

Abstract: BackgroundMultiple risk factors have been identified for traumatic dental injuries, including crown fractures, in various age groups and various populations. The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence, risk factors and family related factors for crown trauma among 8 to 16 year-old children in a suburban population, Nigeria.MethodsThis is a secondary analysis of a data of 2107 children collected through a school-based survey. “…As for epidemiologic studies, among the 631 titles and abstracts screened, 229 full texts were potentially eligible and 77 of them were excluded for various reasons, thus leaving 152 primary studies (Figure ). Of these, 102 studies were considered for TDI prevalence to permanent teeth (Unpublished Material 2), 46 for TDI prevalence to primary teeth (Unpublished Material 3), 42 for TDI prevalence among 12‐year‐old children…”

“…The parental conflict experienced during the divorce process might cause emotional insecurity to the child, which often leads to problem behaviour that could cause injuries. 11,12 One reason for this TA B L E 3 Regression models for the association between family environment indicators and traumatic dental injuries (n = 646) conflicting evidence may be differences in the definition of family structure. This could be due to the more stressful parenting and worse parental relationships taking place in lone-parent and reconstituted families.…”

“…7 Family structure has also been related to accidents, with greater incidence of injuries among children in single-parent and reconstituted families. Some studies have shown an association between family structure and TDI 11,12 while other studies have not reported any association. 9,10 The influence of the family environment on TDI among adolescents has not been adequately explored.…”

“…However, there are few studies that have evaluated the group aged from 15 to 19 years. The world literature shows rates from 7.9% to 26.6% of adolescents presenting evidence of TDI, which can lead to functional, esthetic, and psychological disorders, as well as cause significant concerns among children, parents, and dentists . The treatments required for traumatized teeth are often complex and expensive, and the identification of risk factors might guide educational prevention programs …”
