Prevalence and impact of headache and migraine among Pomeranians in Espirito Santo, Brazil

Abstract: This is the first study to assess the prevalence of headache and migraine among Pomeranian descendents in Brazil. A high prevalence of headache in the last 6 months was found (53.2%). Most headache sufferers were diagnosed as having migraine (55%). More women reported to have headache than men (65% and 33.8%, respectively). “…The prevalence of migraine varies as a function of biological factors (gender and age) and cultural factors, 10-12 which may explain why the prevalence of headache, as a function of demographics, varies so broadly in different studies. [13][14][15][16] In our study, marital status and high level of education were associated with headaches in unadjusted analyses. However, after adjustments, the variables did not remain significantly associated, probably representing confounding factors.…”

“…Sanvito et al [20] reported 54.4% migraine in females and 28.3% migraine in female population in their study sample. Domingues et al [21] reported 62.2% of females and 37.8% of males suffered from migraine headaches. Jensen and Stovner, [22] also reported a high prevalence in female population.…”

“…Data concerning heterozygote frequencies are important for the genetic counseling of individuals in particular populations and the establishment of effective public health policies. Santa Maria de Jetibá represents the third largest Pomeranian population in the world, and is known to have maintained its cultural identity (Bahia, 2001;Domingues et al, 2006).…”
