Prevalence and inventory of venous anatomical abnormalities in the arms of patients with combined capillary, venous and lymphatic malformations (Klippel–Trénaunay syndrome)

Abstract: Objectives To investigate the prevalence of arm-involvement in Klippel-Trénaunay syndrome (KTS)-patients and to describe the venous anatomy and/or venous aberrations present in the arm, and if possible, their relationship to complaints (pain, congestion and thromboembolic events). Methods A retrospective cohort-study was performed with data from medical records of a large KTS-cohort (n = 173) from a tertiary referral center. Within this cohort, a descriptive study (n = 12) was performed on the KTS-patients wit… Show more

“…Tissue overgrowth usually affects one of the lower limbs [5] and is described as overgrowth of bone and soft tissue, which can increase in size by the coarsening of bone layers, venous hypertension [10], or oedema caused by lymph stasis caused by compression or obstruction. Upper extremities are less frequently affected by the disease -in 24.9% of cases, or 11% in situations where an upper limb is the only one affected [14].…”

“…Nine of the twelve had venous malformations. 14 It is believed that deep vein abnormalities as a result of obstruction of venous flow lead to venous hypertension, varicose veins, and organ hypertrophy. 15 But in this disease, intracerebral arteriovenous abnormalities are very rare.…”
