Prevalence and Predictors of the Short-Term Trajectory of Anxiety and Depression in the First Year After a Cancer Diagnosis: A Population-Based Longitudinal Study

Abstract: Targeted psychological screening of vulnerable survivors and early intervention may prevent the onset and/or reduce the severity of psychological morbidity in early survivorship. Trials of risk reduction interventions targeting psychological functioning and health risk behaviors seem warranted.

“…5,41 Some patients experience transient symptoms as an initial reaction to their diagnosis, 42 whereas others experience persistent symptoms for years during survivorship. 19,20,43,44 Approximately half of the study cohort experienced depression symptoms at some point during the study and symptoms persisted in most patients. In other cancer populations, persistent symptoms are associated with poor adherence to anticancer treatments, 7,45 and significant cognitive 46 and functional impairment, 47,48 which may contribute to increased mortality.…”

“…Depressive symptoms may have a negative impact on health-related quality of life (Sellick & Crooks, 1999;Stanton, 2006), adherence to treatment (DiMatteo & Haskard-Zolnierek, 2011;Manning & Bettencourt, 2011), and disease progression and mortality (Lloyd-Williams, Shiels, Taylor, & Dennis, 2009;Pinquart & Duberstein, 2010;Satin, Linden, & Phillips, 2009;Schulz, Drayer, & Rollman, 2002). Although depression prevalence is highest during active treatment, it remains at 8% among patients who are at least 1 year after diagnosis when measured with diagnostic interviews (Krebber et al, 2014); the prevalence increases to 15%, if sub-syndromal symptoms of depression measured by self-report instruments are included (Boyes, Girgis, D'Este, Zucca, & Lecathelinais, 2013;Jones et al, 2012;Krebber et al, 2014).…”
