“…Notably, painful peripheral neuropathy, even in patients who carry causative Na + channel mutations throughout life, usually begins to produce symptoms in middle age (Faber et al., 2012; Huang et al., 2014). In addition, middle‐aged patients tend to report more intensive psychological impacts of their conditions and greater pain “unpleasantness” levels (Gibson & Lussier, 2012; Rustoen et al., 2005). The information carried by mouse IB4+ neurons has been shown to be conveyed to the bed nucleus of the stria terminalis, which is involved in persistent anxiety responses, and to the globus pallidus, which is involved in motor control (Braz et al., 2005).…”

“…With regard to clinical conditions, research shows contradictory findings: on one side older patients' comorbidity burden (Maniar et al 2009), their vulnerability (Gibson and Lussier 2012), their pain and several other complaints may negatively affect their quality of life (Jakobsson et al 2004). On the other hand, older age seems also to be associated with higher self-rated successful aging, despite worse physical and cognitive functioning (Jeste et al 2013).…”

“…Discretionary and higher order physical activities appear the most affected, while the basic activities of daily living (ADL) may be modified, but they are rarely given up altogether (Gibson and Lussier 2012). Risks of depression and mood disturbances have been documented in older people with sedentary physical activities and chronic medical conditions (Lee et al 2014).…”

“…Smerter er en utbredt plage blant eldre, både hos dem som er hjemmeboende og hos dem som bor på institusjon (2). Epidemiologiske studier viser ingen aldersforskjeller når det gjelder akutt smerte, mens det kan synes som om kronisk og vedvarende smerter øker med økende alder (2,3). I tillegg til vedvarende smerter har eldre også akutte smerter som kan vaere et varsel om sykdom eller skade.…”
