Abstract: Prevalence of erosive esophagitis (EE) has been increasing in Korea. The purpose of this study was to estimate prevalence of EE among low socioeconomic population in Korea and to investigate risk factors for EE. We reviewed the medical records of 7,278 subjects who were examined by upper endoscopy in the Korean National Cancer Screening Program at Chung-Ang University Yong-san Hospital from March 2003 to March 2008. “…In this study, the prevalence of EE was 8.8 %, which is similar to the prevalence rates of 6.7, 7.9, and 7.6 % in previous Korean studies (Kim et al 2011a , b ; Shim et al 2009 ; Lee et al 2011 ) and 6.4 % in a Chinese study (Zou et al 2011 ), but lower than the prevalence rates of 15.5 and 11.8 % in Western populations (Ronkainen et al 2005 ; Zagari et al 2008 ).…”

“…The prevalence of RE among Koreans is reported to range from 3% to 5%, and most of the patients had mild‐grade esophagitis . However, more recent studies suggest that the prevalence of RE in Asia is increasing . This study with endoscopic diagnosis shows that overall prevalence of RE was determined to be 6.2%.…”

“…In contrast, GERD has been traditionally considered less common in the Orient, especially in the Far East. The prevalence of GERD in Korea has been believed to be low, but the incidence of GERD in Korea is expected to increase because of the longer life expectancy and more ingestion of westernized food that may induce or exacerbate GERD in Korean people . Various methods have been used to estimate the prevalence of GERD.…”
