“…Specifically, we observed that age above 55 years was associated with peripheral neuropathy. This is in accordance with previous reports in Egypt, Mexico and Italy [ 13 , 26 , 31 , 32 ], who reported older age as a predictor of peripheral neuropathy. Patients aged greater than 55 years were 6 times more likely to develop peripheral neuropathy than their younger counterparts in our study.…”

“…18 A crosssectional clinical and electrophysiological study of 31 HCV-infected Mexican patients detected evidence of neuropathy in 58%. 19 In a prospective electrophysiological study of 89 HCV-infected patients with detectable cryoglobulinemia, peripheral neuropathy was detected in 37%. 20 A cross-sectional clinical and electrodiagnostic study to determine the prevalence of neuropathy of 78 Brazilian patients with HCV infection detected predominantly multiple mononeuropathy in 34% of patients.…”

“…17 In the study of Téllez-Zenteno et al, risk factors for neuropathy were positive rheumatoid factor, cryoglobulinemia, and high viral load as well as advanced patient age, prolonged time of evolution, and low complement level. 19 Zaltron et al showed that neuropathy was associated with the presence of ''symptomatic'' cryoglobulinemia, older patient age, higher rheumatoid factor reactivity and IgM levels, and reduced complement C4 activity; neuropathy was unrelated to cryocrit and type of cryoglobulinemia. 20 In a prospective clinical, serologic, electrodiagnostic, and morphologic study of 51 HCV-infected patients with and without cryoglobulinemia, the presence of cryoglobulin in the serum was predictive of more severe and widespread neuropathic involvement; however, the vasculitic nerve damage in both groups suggested that cryoglobulins were not the unique factor involved in peripheral neuropathy.…”
