Prevalence and Risk Factors for Herpes Simplex Virus Type 2 Infection Among Middle-Age Women in Brazil and the Philippines

Abstract: The higher HSV-2 seroprevalence in Brazil than in the Philippines may be explained largely by differences in the sexual behavior of women and their husbands. Herpes simplex virus type 2 seroprevalence data may be used as a marker of past sexual behavior for the direct comparison of different population groups.

“…Evidence that HSV-2-infection increases the risk of transmitting HIV (Celum 2004) indicates that further studies are necessary to clarify the interaction of these two infections. Smith et al (2001) found that middle-age women in Brazil that suspected their husbands had extramarital partners had higher HSV-2 seropositivity rates. According to these authors, this finding suggests that the risk of HSV-2 acquisition is dependent not only on whether a woman's husband has other sexual partners, but also on the likelihood that he will acquire HSV-2 infection from these sexual partners.…”

“…Most previous studies in Brazil and Latin America were conducted in a single geographic area and recruited volunteers from specifi c, non-representative populations such as blood donors, pregnant women, 2,23 and high-risk groups. 5,13,19,24 This approach entails the possibility of selection bias and thus only generates data representative of the populations studied.…”

“…Several studies with adolescents, pregnant or not pregnant women, and blood donors found a seroprevalence of anti-HSV-2 ranging between 22.6% and 42%. 5,12,13,19,23 In one study, the control group of a cervical cancer study in São Paulo (N=181) and the Philippines (N=371) showed a prevalence of HSV-2 of 42% in Brazilian women and of only 9.2% in the Philippines. 19 In contrast, the seroprevalence of HSV-2 in our study was 23.8% in same-age women.…”

“…Since the seventies, the prevalence of HSV-2 infection has been steadily increasing; this problem has become a public health issue in recent years, even during the "HIV decade" [62]. One recent study on the prevalence of HSV-2 infection in middle-aged Brazilian women found 42% seropositivity [63]. Carvalho et al [64] found varying prevalence rates according to the subpopulation studied: 6.9% of students evaluated, 22.6% of pregnant women and 53.1% of the individuals with sexually transmitted diseases presented antibodies to HSV-2.…”
