Prevalence and Risk Factors of Dry Eye Symptoms after Successful Dacryocystorhinostomy for Patients with Lacrimal Passage Obstruction

Abstract: Purpose To investigate the prevalence of dry eye symptoms after successful dacryocystorhinostomy and explore the potential risk factors. Methods: This cross-sectional study included 565 patients with lacrimal passage obstruction (LPO) who underwent external dacryocystorhinostomy. Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) total score of 13 or more was regarded as presence of dry eye symptoms. OSDI total score greater than 22 combined with self-reported dry eye was defined as symptomatic dry eye. Logistic regression a… Show more

“…The OSDI score (33.33 [18.92, 53.04]) was considerably higher in the PANDO group than in the control group (13.89 [2.78, 25.00]) ( p < 0.001). The MG loss score was higher in the PANDO group (3 [ 2 , 4 ]) than in the control group (2 [ 2 , 3 ]) ( p = 0.004). The eyelid margin score was higher in the PANDO group (3 [ 2 , 4 ]) than in the control group (2 [ 1 , 3 ]), (< 0.001).…”

The eyelid margin score was higher in the PANDO group (3 [ 2 , 4 ]) than in the control group (2 [ 1 , 3 ]), (< 0.001). There was no significant difference in the CFS score, MG expressibility score, or meibum quality score between the PANDO group and the control group (Table 2 ).…”

“…However, for patients with NLDO, they may still face a variety of physical and mental health problems after treatment. For example, dry eye symptoms may worsen after the improvement of epiphora, which also affects the patient’s quality of life ( 25 ). Incomplete improvement of epiphora symptoms and the appearance of dry eye symptoms, including accompanying skin irritation symptoms and social embarrassment, may have a negative effect on the quality of life and psychological state of patients, leading to the emergence of anxiety and depressive symptoms.…”

“…Otherwise, shrinkage of the mucosa, which is an expected alteration during the healing phase, might obstruct the bony window fully or partially, ultimately resulting in a blockage of tear flow to the nasal cavity (8). With a successful DCR, optimal patency of the nasolacrimal duct can be achieved by the removal of bony elements between the anterior and posterior lacrimal crests (9). Therefore, it should be considered that the variational morphology of this relatively small region might affect the outcomes of the DCR (10).…”
