Prevalence and risk factors of asymptomatic colorectal diverticulosis in Taiwan

Abstract: BackgroundTo investigate the prevalence and risk factors of asymptomatic colorectal diverticulosis in Taiwanese general population.MethodsFrom January 2009 to December 2011, consecutive asymptomatic subjects undergoing a health check-up were evaluated by colonoscopy. The colorectal diverticulosis was assessed, and a medical history and demographic data were obtained from each subject. Logistic regression analysis was conducted to search the risk factors of colorectal diverticulosis.ResultsOf the 1899 asymptoma… Show more

“…In our cohort, the detection rate of CRD increased annually and presented an upward trend with population aging. CRD was more frequently seen in the people aged ≥60 years (3.16%), especially in the 75-89 age group (4.96%), which might explain why a relatively high detection rate of 13.5% in asymptomatic Taiwanese who were undergoing health check-up from 2009 to 2011 [7]. Our finding is basically consistent with previous research results of Europe and the United States [8,9].…”

“…The prevalence of diverticulosis was 12% in Korea (mean age 51) 9 and 14% in Taiwan (mean age 53). 10 The prevalence of diverticulosis was 25% in Japan (mean age 58). 11 Proximal diverticula were more common in these populations although the distal colon was not spared.…”

“…Additionally, the prevalence of diverticulosis was 12% in Korea (mean age: 51 years) [13] and 14% in Taiwan (mean age: 53 years) [14]. Barium studies in Japan have shown a significant increase in the prevalence of diverticulosis in the late 1900s, from 2.1% in 1967 and 7.8% in 1983 to 28% in 1997; the increase may be associated with the adoption of a Western lifestyle [15][16][17][18].…”

“…The incidence of left-sided diverticular disease has markedly increased with age but has not significantly changed over time. In Korea, 15% of patients with colonic diverticulosis had distal diverticula [13], whereas half of the Japanese and Taiwanese populations with colonic diverticulosis had distal diverticula [14,15].…”
