Prevalence and type of anaemia in female cotton mill workers in Beijing, China

Abstract: The present study investigates the prevalence and type of anaemia in Chinese female cotton mill workers. The prevalence of anaemia is reported in 447 non-pregnant female workers aged between 19 and 45 years. The mean value for haemoglobin (Hb) was 123 (SD 15) g/1 and 150 of the total 447 subjects had Hb values below 120 g/l; thus 34% of the population was anaemic according to World Health Organization (WHO, 1975) criteria. The mean value for free erythrocyte protoporphyrin (FEP) was 419 (SD 215) pg/l; 55 % of … Show more

“…The prevalence of anaemia in non-pregnant women was 27.9%, and no men were found to be anaemic. The prevalence of anaemia among adult women in this study was lower than that among non-pregnant Chinese cotton mill workers (34%) [24] but remained within the range of the prevalence of anaemia in Indonesia nine years ago [11]. Iron supplements resulted in improved productivity [9] and production efficiency [25].…”

“…Anemia, especially iron-de®ciency anemia, had been considered as a long-standing public health problem, even in large cities, in the past (Zhao, 1992;Li et al, 1993). In the present survey in Jilin, however, those with`12 g Hba100 ml blood were only 5% of the participants, with no signi®cant urban ± rural difference (Table 2), which suggests that anemia is no longer a major public health problem, at least in the sites surveyed.…”

“…The most important factors known to be associated with anaemia in a community include low socioeconomic status, poor diet, infections and infestations as a result of widespread poverty [7][8][9][10][11][12][13][14][15] . However, there are variations in these factors in relation to the prevalence and severity of anaemia in different parts of the world and even within countries [16][17][18][19][20] . In the United States, the highest anaemia prevalence was observed in infants aged 1-2 years, girls 15-17 years, young women and elderly men, and on the other hand, the lowest prevalence was in children aged 6-8 years and in males aged 12-44 years 21 .…”
