Prevalence and Virulence of Commensal Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Isolates from Healthy Individuals in Southern Vietnam (2018–2020)

Abstract: Understanding the colonization of Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) in healthy humans is useful for future prevention and treatment of P. aeruginosa infection. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence and risk factors of of P. aeruginosa colonization in healthy humans. At the same time, the virulence of the isolated P. aeruginosa was also studied. In the study, 609 Vietnamese volunteers (310 females and 299 males, age range of 2 to 73 years), who had no acute infection or disease symptoms participat… Show more

“…Chrysanthemum is a medicinal and edible herb containing abundant VO. Over the years, the utility of Chrysanthemum VO as a therapeutic agent with great potential has been gradually recognized by researchers in various fields, not only in clinical and cosmetic skin care as a potential natural bacteriostatic or antioxidant agent and in other therapeutic drugs [129,130] , but also as a potential natural antiseptic additive and biodegradable food packaging in the food industry [131] . The VO extract is also a natural biological insecticide that is commonly used in agricultural pest control [132] .…”

“…Pyocyanin was extracted with chloroform and 0.2 M HCl and 125 µl of the red layer was transferred to a 96-well microtitre plate. The concentration of pyocyanin (μg µl -1 ) was estimated by multiplying the optical density (OD) at 520 nm by 17.072, following the previous study [16]. E. coli was used as a negative control.…”

“…Bacteriocins represent an attractive source of antioncogenic compounds arising from their specificity, nontoxicity and abundance within the skin microbiome [ 208 ]. Pyocins (bacteriocins produced by the genus Pseudomonas ) of the transient opportunistic pathogen Pseudomonas aeruginosa selectively inhibit the proliferation of human hepatoma, B lymphocyte and murine fibroblast cell lines [ 209 , 210 ]. The antioncogenic activity of bacteriocins produced by skin-relevant pathogens has been described, such as Klebsiella pneumoniae -derived microcin E492; however, the therapeutic potential of skin-microbiome-derived bacteriocins remains unexplored [ 208 ].…”
