Prevalence, Genotypic Characteristics and Antibiotic Resistance of Listeria monocytogenes From Retail Foods in Bulk in Zhejiang Province, China

Abstract: Listeria monocytogenes is an important foodborne pathogen causing public concern. A total of 3354 retail foods in bulk were sampled and screened for L. monocytogenes . Seventy-three (2.2%) samples including 21 ready-to-eat (RTE) foods and 52 raw foods were confirmed positive for L. monocytogenes . Sushi and salmon sashimi occupied the top two slots in RTE foods with relatively high presence rate of 12.9 and 6.9%, respectively. Meanwhile, L. m… Show more

“…13,[21][22][23][24][25][26] An investigation on the prevalence of L. monocytogenes in retail foods showed that ST9 (23.3%), ST155 (16.4%), and ST8 (12.3%) were the main dominant types in Zhejiang province. 27 Their observations combined the results from this work imply the epidemiological difference between clinical and food isolates from Zhejiang province, although prevalent serotypes 1/2a, 1/2b, and 4b were also identified in that study. Of note, ST87 clone was the predominant ST in clinical L. monocytogenes isolates and closely related to pregnancy-associated infections in China.…”

“…In our research, a small number of isolates belonged to ST9/CC9, ST91/CC14, and ST141/CC155 were newly found to harboured llsX and/or ptsA, suggesting that they may pose a hyper-pathogenic risk to public health. Those LIPI-3 and/or LIPI-4-positive isolates belonged to lineage II, which was inconsistent with the finding that LIPI-3 was identified exclusively in a subset of lineage I [44]. It is probably because strains in farm or slaughtering environment have evolved these two genes through gene transfer under natural environmental pressures.…”

“…In Mexico, L. monocytogenes was present in 16/79 (20.3%) pork samples collected from two slaughterhouses from 2014 to 2015 in southern Sonora ( Figueroa-LĆ³pez et al, 2019 ). In China, L. monocytogenes contaminations in retail raw pork (11.68ā€“30%), chilled pork (11ā€“55%), and RTE pork (4.61ā€“13.5%) have been reported in recent years ( Yin et al, 2015 ; Li et al, 2018 ; Chen et al, 2019 ; Zhang et al, 2019b ). Pork is the most frequently consumed meat in China, the main consumption habit is to take cooked pork.…”
