Altogether, these data support the hypothesis that increased prevalence of oral HPV16 detected among men at older ages is likely due to increased duration of infections and not increased acquisition, a pattern consistent with that of cervical HPV infection persistence (21-23). Similar to factors thought to influence HPV persistence at the cervix, our observation of increased oral HPV persistence with age may be due to impairment of host immune responses (24) and elevation of inflammatory cytokines (25) that occur throughout the aging process.…”
