Prevalence of abdominal aortic aneurysm in patients referred for transthoracic echocardiography

Abstract: This study revealed a high prevalence of newly diagnosed AAA in a group of older men having cardiac evaluation. There was a relationship of increasing age with AAA, and a significant proportion of newly diagnosed subjects were not suitable for AAA repair.

“…In men aged 65e74 years the prevalence of AAA was 4.7%, rising to 8.5% in those aged 75e84 years. 16 In the present study, CTC was associated with similar age group specific AAA prevalence rates to that of those undergoing echocardiography. Although increased AAA prevalence has been reported in association with severe (angiographically confirmed) coronary artery disease, 17 the large proportion of angiographically normal patients under evaluation for valvular disease in an "echo cohort" would most likely mask a coronary disease driven prevalance effect.…”

“…In the study by Majeed et al, 16 10,403 patients undergoing a transoesophageal echo were also examined for the presence of AAA. In men aged 65e74 years the prevalence of AAA was 4.7%, rising to 8.5% in those aged 75e84 years.…”

“…The first was from a cohort of patients undergoing transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE) and the second from a group undergoing CT colonography (CTC) for the evaluation of gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms. 6,7 The prevalence of AAA in men aged 65-74 years undergoing TTE and CTC was 4.7% (83/1767) and 9.1% (45/492) respectively. 6,7 This prevalence is similar to previous population studies conducted in Europe and Australia a decade ago despite a potential selection bias introduced by using targeted populations undergoing CTC or TTE studies.…”
