Prevalence of age-associated memory impairment and dementia in a rural community.

Abstract: To obtain accurate estimates of the prevalence of age-associated memory impairment, dementia, and Alzheimer's disease, a population study was carried out in Turegano, a rural community of 1011 inhabitants in the Segovia province of Spain. The study was divided into two phases: a door to door survey of the entire population aged 40 years and over (503 persons), followed by a clinical examination of suspected cases for positive and differential diagnosis of dementia and cognitive impairment. The prevalence of ag… Show more

“…The prevalence rate of AAMI in our study was much lower compared with an earlier study on 65-to 69-yearold subjects [25]. However, in a door-to-door survey on 65-to 74-year-old individuals, a rate of 3% has been estimated [26], which is closer to our estimate. For all the diagnoses studied here, we are not able to comment on the effect of age on increasing prevalence in our study due to the narrow age range of our subjects.…”

“…Therefore, how these criteria are operationalised is critical for identifying a ''pathological'' MCI syndrome, and this may have explained the wide range of estimates of the prevalence of MCI. Among the studies using the AAMI criteria, the MCI prevalence ranged from 7.1% (in subjects aged over 65), 17 to 53.8%. 18 In other study, the prevalence for AAMI was 18.5%, using cut off points adjusted for age, 19 but 40% met the criteria if no age adjustments were made.…”

“…This aspect is particularly suggestive in Spain [10,11] . Although some variability between countries can be explained [12][13][14] , methodological aspects have the greatest impact, particularly the screening instruments [15] , the institutional characteristics of the population studied, or even the diagnostic coding system used. In addition to increased age, a number of other risk factors for VD have been reported.…”
