Prevalence of alcohol and other drug use in patients presenting to hospital for fall-related injuries: a systematic review

Abstract: BackgroundAlcohol and other drug (AOD) use is a key preventable risk factor for serious injuries. Prevention strategies to date have largely focused on transport injuries, despite AOD use being a significant risk factor for other injury causes, including falls. This systematic review aimed to report the prevalence of AOD use in patients presenting to hospital for fall-related injuries.MethodsThis systematic review includes studies published in English after the year 2010 that objectively measured the prevalenc… Show more

“…An emerging theme from current literature pertaining to risk factors for injury has been the detection of other drugs, besides alcohol, and were not considered in the present study. 22 A clinical guideline of routine testing for blood alcohol resulted in a high proportion of the eligible population having BACs, but BAC data were still missing for 12% of cases.…”

“…Risk of bias was assessed using the Joanna Briggs Institute Checklist for Prevalence Studies, which is a validated tool designed to critically appraise the various study designs that can report on prevalence [30]. Detailed risk of bias assessment criteria have been published previously [25] and are available in Table S3, Supporting Information. Assessments were completed independently by two reviewers (authors GL and either JYA or NK).…”

“…The exclusion of studies that focused exclusively on specific injury causes is consistent with the methods of an existing systematic review that examined illicit drug use in emergency settings [3]. The protocol for the overarching review was prospectively registered to PROSPERO (CRD42020188746) and methods have previously been reported in corresponding papers [25,26].…”

The protocol for the larger review was prospectively registered to PROSPERO (CRD42020188746) and the methods have previously been reported in a corresponding paper (Lau et al, 2022).…”
