Prevalence of Anal High-Risk Human Papillomavirus Infections Among HIV-Positive and HIV-Negative Men Who Have Sex With Men in Nigeria

Abstract: Background Prevalence estimates of anal high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) are needed in sub-Saharan Africa where HIV is endemic. This study evaluated anal HR-HPV in Nigeria among HIV-positive and HIV-negative men who have sex with men (MSM) for future immunization recommendations. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study to compare the prevalence of anal HR-HPV infections between 64 HIV-negative and 90 HIV-positive MSM. Multivariate Poisson regression analyses were used to examine demographic and b… Show more

“…Data on demographics, sexual behaviors, HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among Nigerian men who have sex with men (MSM) were previously collected [20, 21]. The prevalence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) was characterized in a subset of 165 participants [22]. After HPV testing, seven samples had insufficient volume and 28 failed the 16S rRNA amplification criteria of 1000 reads, leaving a final sample size of 130 for the rectal microbiota analysis.…”

“…The persistent anal HPV infections have been particularly found in high-risk HPV types, which are the predominant risk factors for anal cancer 12,13 . Thus, HIV infection is considered one of the most important independent risk factors for high-risk anal HPV infection [14][15][16][17] .…”

“…In Africa, the prevalence of anal HPV was 69.1% in Central Africa and 40.6% in Nigeria [49,50]. Up to 82.7% of hrHPV was reported in Central Africa out of which 52.0% were multiple infections and more prevalent among HIV-positive MSM [49].…”
