Prevalence of anticholinergic medication use among elderly nursing home residents with depression

Abstract: A211the fully adjusted HR was 2.03; 95% CI (1.13-3.65) among children exposed to SSRIs alone and 4.10; 95% CI (1.35-12.41) among children exposed to combined classes of antidepressant. ConClusions: This study suggests that use of antidepressant during the 2 nd /3 rd trimester of pregnancy may increase the risk of ASD.

“…The Anticholinergic Drug Scale (ADS) also classifies paroxetine as a strongly anticholinergic agent (level 2) compared with other SSRIs . Although paroxetine may be potentially inappropriate because of its strong anticholinergic properties, it is commonly used in depressed elderly patients . None of the previous studies have evaluated the risk of mortality due to paroxetine in patients with cognitive issues such as depression .…”

“…Paroxetine is commonly used in elderly nursing home patients with depression. [19][20][21] A 1-year double-blind, randomized, parallel-group, multicenter Italian study compared paroxetine and fluoxetine for cognitive functions in nondemented elderly patients with depression. This study did not find cognitive decline with the use of paroxetine and fluoxetine.…”

“…18 Although strongly anticholinergic, paroxetine is used in elderly patients with depression. [19][20][21] A review of the effects of newer antidepressants on neurocognitive function concluded that paroxetine is associated with a lower performance on neurocognitive measures such as verbal recall scores and paired-associate learning scores than other SSRIs. 22 However, none of the studies have examined the cognitive impact of individual agents, specifically paroxetine.…”

“…Although paroxetine is highly anticholinergic, it is commonly used for the treatment of depression among elderly patients (23)(24)(25). However, very little is known about its cognitive effects among elderly patients with depression.…”
