Prevalence of Atopy and Pollinosis in the Adult Population of Switzerland (SAPALDIA Study)

Abstract: The Swiss SAPALDIA study is a large multicenter cross-sectional study initiated in 1991 to evaluate the relationship between environment and respiratory symptoms and diseases in adults, and included subjects from eight areas in Switzerland with distinctive environmental characteristics. We present here prevalence data for atopy, pollinosis and atopic asthma obtained from a random sample of 8,357 adults (18–60 years) assessed by standardized computer-based interview as well as by allergy skin prick tests (SPTs)… Show more

“…The authors have attempted to avoid as many imprecisions as possible: the questionnaire was conducted by a trained technician using a computer to record answers immediately. The SAPALDIA questionnaire is an extended version of the questionnaire used in the European Community Respiratory Health Survey [1,17]. Other studies have used the same questionnaire but have not attempted to calculate the sensitivity and specificity of the different symptoms in asthmatics [8,16].…”

“…Asthma is a common respiratory disease which affects more than 5% of the Swiss population [1]. The prevalence of asthma varies considerably among studies due to the lack of well accepted definitions [2] and the different clinical or epidemiological approaches, and underlying population characteristics.…”

“…Concomitant to the rise in asthma prevalence, an even stronger increase in the prevalence of hay fever has been reported in England and Scotland [2,7], Australia [3], and Sweden [8]. In Switzerland, hay fever prevalence in adults has been on the rise since the 1920s [9]. In adolescents, two surveys 10 yrs apart demonstrated an increase in asthma prevalence [4] and GASSNER et al [10] gave evidence for rising prevalence rates of hay fever in a small sample of Swiss adolescents monitored yearly between 1983 and 1992.…”
