Prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors in an urban adult population from southern Spain. IMAP Study

Abstract: The population studied presents a high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors, especially dyslipidaemia and obesity. The low academic level was associated with an increased prevalence of smoking, obesity and dyslipidaemia. People with a low socio-cultural level are a priority target for introducing policies to prevent and control cardiovascular disease.

“…Similar associations were observed with fasting glucose levels, but HbA1c strongly correlates with the level of ambient glycemia during a 2 to 3 month period, so that it reflects the usual daily fasting and postprandial glucose levels as established by the American Diabetes Association (ADA) [19]. Since a high prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors has been recently reported in this particular population [15,16], these findings may be crucial for implementing prophylactic interventions in order to prevent or delay CKD and CVD.…”

“…The prevalence of general and abdominal obesity has been recently studied in a national sample of Spanish general (>18 years) and elderly (≥65 years) population [11,12] and in regional samples [13-18]. However, the association of both types of obesity with the 10-year coronary disease risk estimated with the Framingham-REGICOR risk functions validated for the Spanish population [19] has not been studied in depth.…”

“…Yet it is commonly thought that these are mostly applicable only to the miserable Northern world whilst in the Mediterranean the sun shines, families frolic happily in the street (to the songs of Zorba/Radio Tarifa or nowadays Abba) and the local diet obviates the need for any further measures. The paper by Gomez‐Huelgas in this issue gives the lie to this rosy‐tinted scenario (2). The reality of life in a survey of 2270 participants is an obesity prevalence of 60%, sedentary lifestyles in 77%, 65% with dyslipidaemia, 27% smoking, 33% with hypertension and 15% with dysglycaemia and 7% with diabetes.…”
