Prevalence of Celiac Disease in Down Syndrome in the United States

Abstract: There was a high prevalence of positivity to antiendomysium antibody in Down syndrome. Antiendomysium antibody was a more sensitive screening test than antigliadin antibody. The prevalence of celiac disease in Down syndrome in the southeastern United States was 1 in 14 cases. Screening with antiendomysium antibody and IgA for all children with Down syndrome is recommended, even if there are no gastrointestinal symptoms.

“…In Turner syndrome the prevalence is 4.1 to 8.1% [15]. For Williams syndrome is 8.2% [16], and it is about 12% in individuals with Down syndrome [17]. Celiac disease may be associated with other autoimmune conditions such as Type I Diabetes Mellitus, in which more than 8% of individuals present this disease [18,19] also being associated with eosinophilic esophagitis [20].…”

“…The published studies about the incidence of celiac disease in Down's syndrome patients utilized different criteria of patient selection (Table II), and thus the study groups are heterogeneous and the results are A Au ut th ho or r, , d da at te e, , c co ou un nt tr ry y S Se el le ec ct ti io on n c cr ri it te er ri ia a o of f p pa at ti ie en nt ts s w wi it th h D Do ow wn n' 's s s sy yn nd dr ro om me e [22,30,31,35,36,38,[42][43][44]; there are few studies on the incidence of celiac disease in Down's syndrome patients conducted on the scale of a large region or country [32,39,40]. The only available multi-center study assessing the incidence of celiac disease, conducted on a group of Down's syndrome patients in a number that complies with the requirements of an epidemiological study, was performed by an Italian group.…”
