Abstract: Background: The prevalence of gallstones among Ghanaians is unknown. We aimed to determine the prevalence of gallstones among persons undergoing abdominal ultrasound at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH). Methods: We performed a cross-sectional study of patients aged ≥14years presenting to KATH for abdominal ultrasound between 2009 and 2012. Patient demographics were recorded. “…6 (Trichy) with mean age in the study of 43.56±13.18 years and other studies in literature like Shukrya Kamil Khalaf (Iraq) and Adam Gyedu (Ghana). 9,10 Maximum patients were observed in 4 th and 5 th decade in present study, which is suggestive of early occurrence of gallstone disease in Indian population that is consistent with study done by Bhatti in Lahore Pakistan and Muthalaisamy in Trichy but Veerbhadrappa in Madhya Pradesh found an increased incidence in 5 th and 6 th decade in India. [5][6][7] The decade of peak incidence in the present study is same for both genders but Selvi et al found the decade for peak incidence of cholelithiasis in females was 5 th decade and 6 th decade for males.…”

“…In spite of the phenomenal increase we found, the absolute number of cholecystectomies performed is still very low compared to many centers in Western countries. This is due to the relatively low incidence of gallstone disease in Nigeria and other West African countries which has been reported to range between 3%–6% in hospital-based studies[ 13 14 22 23 ] compared to 64%–73%/among American Indians and 14% among Black Americans in major population-based studies. [ 24 ] Being a public hospital, a number of months in different years within the period of this study were lost to incessant industrial actions of health workers across the country.…”
