Prevalence of clinically significant depressive symptoms in an epidemiologic sample of community‐dwelling elders with milder forms of cognitive impairment in Hong Kong SAR

Abstract: In our sample, milder forms of cognitive impairment were associated with increased risk for depression in the presence of other risk factors such as male gender, higher physical illness burden and longer duration of cognitive symptoms.

“…These factors may be exacerbated with the separation of the oldest‐old elders from family members resulting in social isolation, which increases their risk for depressive symptoms (Kaplan & Sadok, 1995). In fact, depressive symptoms are more common among the elderly worldwide, including the oldest‐old elders (Barnes, Alexopoulos, Lopez, Williamson, & Yaffe, 2006; Bruce et al, 2003; Chan et al, 2008; Doniger et al, 2006; Ganguli et al, 1999; McDougall et al, 2007; Mehta, Yaffe, & Covinsky, 2002; Steffens et al, 2000, 2006; Zhang, 2006). In Brazil, epidemiological studies also suggest that the prevalence of depressive symptoms was high among people 65–75 years old and an upward trend after 75 years of age (Snowdon, 2002).…”

“…Research worldwide suggests that depressive symptoms are associated with cognitive impairment (Barnes et al, 2006; Bruce et al, 2003; Chan et al, 2008; Doniger et al, 2006; Ganguli et al, 1999; Lyketsos et al, 2002; Mehta et al, 2002; Zhang, 2006). Depressive symptoms and cognitive impairment in elders is a public health concern (Steffens et al, 2006) because a great number (up to 52.4%) of elders who have depressive symptoms also have cognitive impairment (Zubenko et al, 2003).…”

“…The original (English) version of CSDD has been widely used in Western countries and been translated by a number of researchers into Chinese for use as a study tool in several studies (Chan et al, 2008;Tung & Chen, 2007;Wong et al, 2006). In Taiwan, the CSDD Chinese version has been utilized to measure the effectiveness of music therapy on cognition, behavioral problems and depression in 90 demented older adults in long-term care facilities (Tung & Chen, 2007).…”

“…In Taiwan, the CSDD Chinese version has been utilized to measure the effectiveness of music therapy on cognition, behavioral problems and depression in 90 demented older adults in long-term care facilities (Tung & Chen, 2007). In Hong Kong, the original CSDD was administered in a study (Wong et al, 2006) that evaluated subjective complaints and self-evaluated the efficacy of a memory test in 92 Chinese with questionable dementia and mild Alzheimer's disease and a two-phase epidemiologic survey on the prevalence of dementia in elderly Chinese (Chan et al, 2008). Despite such applications of the CSDD, no published evidence on the psychometric properties of the Chinese version of this tool was shown in these studies.…”
