Aim and objective To explore the disability, emotional distress and well‐being of patients with lumbar spondylolisthesis. Background Few studies have investigated the correlations between disability, emotional distress and well‐being of patients with lumbar spondylolisthesis. Design This study used a cross‐sectional research design. Methods Participants were 133 patients aged over 50 years who were experiencing lumbar spondylolisthesis. The research instruments included a demographic information questionnaire; the Numeric Rating Scale (NRS); the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI); the Chinese versions of the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), State‐Trait Anxiety Inventory‐State (STAI‐S) and Center for Epidemiological Study‐Depression (CES‐D); and the Psychological Well‐being (PWB) Scale. Emotional distress was measured by the STAI‐S and CES‐D. Pearson's correlations coefficient, multiple linear regression and a mediating effect model were introduced to explore correlations between the variables and predictors of psychological well‐being, and details of the methods are reported in coherence to STROBE criteria. Results Eighty‐six participants (64.6%) had moderate and severe anxiety, and 42 (31.6%) experienced depression. Participants reported medium to high levels of well‐being; “satisfaction with interpersonal relationships” was rated the highest and “physical and mental health” the lowest. Disability, depression and anxiety had significant negative correlations with well‐being. Depression and anxiety mediated the relationship between disability and well‐being. Moreover, depression, family support, educational background and anxiety were predictors of well‐being, accounting for 39.1% of the total variance. Conclusions Disability and emotional distress among patients with lumbar spondylolisthesis had a negative impact on well‐being. Anxiety and depression were closely correlated with and substantially influenced well‐being. Relevance to clinical practice Health professionals will enhance the understanding of important factors influencing well‐being among patients with lumbar spondylolisthesis. This study suggests the conduct of depression and anxiety evaluations at outpatient clinics and prior to surgery, so that clinicians will be aware of the emotional distress status of patients with lumbar spondylolisthesis and, therefore, enhance their well‐being.

BACKGROUND Depression coexisting with chronic pain can influence the course and prognosis of chronic pain due to any aetiology. Till the psychopathology remains unveiled and treated, rehabilitation process in chronic pain patients is incomplete. The studies addressing the treatment of depressive disorder in chronic pain are limited. MATERIALS AND METHODS Patients were recruited via simple randomization from Pain and Palliative clinic of Government Medical College, Thrissur. After obtaining informed consent, patients were assessed using a semi structured questionnaire to elicit socio-demographic information and medical data. VAS scale was used to assess the severity of pain. PHQ 9 Questionnaire was used as a screening tool for depression and ICD-10-Diagnostic Criteria for Research (DCR) for substantiating the diagnosis. Data was analysed in SPSS software using independent sample t test and chi square test. RESULTS The psychiatric morbidity was 48.8% for depression. There was significant association between sex-females having more depression (p<0.001) and marital status-the divorced, separated and spouse expired being more prone for depression (p<0.008). There was a significant association between psychiatric morbidity and pain variables (P <0.0001) including the duration and severity of pain. 21.68% of the depressed patients were getting antidepressants as adjuvant. Out of 18 patients with severe depression, only 3 patients were getting antidepressants as adjuvant. There was no association between age, education, occupation, aetiology of pain, and psychiatric morbidity. CONCLUSION The prevalence of depressive disorder patients with chronic pain of any cause is high. Depression is associated with increased pain perception, poly pharmacy and poor treatment outcome. While dealing with chronic pain, the risk of associated depressive disorder should be evaluated and managed properly.

Background: Kinesio Taping (KT) is a widely used treatment method in the clinical practice that is also largely applied as a therapy for lumbar pain. The method was invented in 1970 by Kenzo Kase et al. and is represented by the application of adhesive tapes on the skin, that are very thin and with elasticity similar to the skin. Although it is frequently used, the efficacy of kinesio taping is still to be proven, and the mechanism it is based upon still remains unclear. Lumbar pain is a very important health issue worldwide; it is pain in the lumbar-sacral region, at the L4-L5 level. Chronic lumbar pain has a high prevalence across the world, affecting especially patients that are over 45 and being associated with high medical and social costs. The aim of this paper is to present a systematic literature analysis regarding the effects of kinesio taping on lumbar pain and on the degree of disability it can lead to. Materials and methods: The research is based on the analysis of relevant scientific studies on the effects of kinesio taping on lumbar pain published in different data basis such as NCBI, PubMed, Crossref, Cochrane Library, Scope Med, Net Journals, and Research Gate between 2012 and 2017. Results: 30 articles were included in the study out of the total number on the topic, articles that correspond with the aim of the study and that present the most recent advancements in the field. Conclusions: KT generally has effects that are similar with those of traditional treatment methods for lower back pain and for the disabilities it can produce, but results appear much faster; moreover, the efficacy is higher when KT is associated with traditional treatment options.
