Prevalence of drink-driving among adults in China: A nationally representative survey in 2010

Abstract: Objective We examined the prevalence of and characteristics associated with drink-driving in China. We compared this study’s drink-driving findings with those from the United States to explore how effective traffic safety interventions from Western cultures might be adapted for use in China. Methods Data from the 2010 China Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Survey were analyzed to describe the prevalence and characteristics associated with drink-driving in China. Results Overall, 1.5% of Chinese adults repor… Show more

“…Male sex was found to be a risk factor for DUIA in all Brazil and in all macroregions except the North. This is consistent with studies conducted in both developed and developing countries, including Brazil, and provides further evidence for sex differences in the prevalence of DUIA [17,20,23,39,46,47]. Studies show that men are more likely than women to experience RTIs, to die from RTIs, and to engage in risky behaviors, such as DUIA [19,46].…”

“…[28]. We also found differences in the prevalence of binge drinking among macroregions, the main risk factor for DUIA [17,20,38,42,43]. The data show a higher prevalence of this behavior in the Northeast (64.4%), Central-West (59.0%) and North (66.2%) macroregions when compared to the Southeast (47.1%) and South (37.4%) (Table S1), which may have influenced the DUIA differences.…”

“…According to the annual bulletin of road traffic crashes in China, published by the Ministry of Public Security (MPS), speeding, drink-driving and fatigued driving caused 6336, 5021 and 1600 injuries, as well as 3075, 2209 and 677 deaths, respectively. In the 2010 China Chronic Disease and Risk Factor Survey, 1.5% of Chinese adults reported drink-driving over the past 30 days; 3% among males and 0.1% among females 6…”
