Prevalence of Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli Strains Harboring the Longus Pilus Gene in Brazil

Abstract: The longus type IV pilus gene (lngA) was highly prevalent (32.8%) among Brazilian enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli strains producing both heat-labile and heat-stable enterotoxins and bearing the CFA/I, CS1CS3, or CS6 antigen. Furthermore, lngA was more often found in strains isolated from children with diarrhea than in strains isolated from children without diarrhea.

“…CS21 is common in ETEC strains from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Egypt, and Bangladesh (13,21,23,24). In a previous study carried out with Chilean ETEC isolates, CS21 was detected by probe hybridization in a lower percentage of strains (28%) than that in our current study (71.8%) (13).…”

“…In a previous study carried out with Chilean ETEC isolates, CS21 was detected by probe hybridization in a lower percentage of strains (28%) than that in our current study (71.8%) (13). The higher proportion of isolates with CS21 in this study might be due to the fact that we included ETEC strains only from children with diarrhea, in which CS21 ETEC seems to be more common (21). To date the immunogenic potential of CS21 is unknown.…”

“…It is well established that ETEC strains colonize the small intestine mediated by appendices called colonization factors (39). CFA III from ETEC is a type IV pilus that has been found only in LT-producing strains of the O25:H16 and O25:H2 serotypes and has been associated with CS6 (21,34).…”

“…Longus, a bundle-forming, pilus, is comprised of CS21 units and appears to be more common in ST-producing strains [98,99]. Between 8% and 36% of ETEC isolates from different locations express the longus pilus, generally in conjunction with other CS antigens [100][101][102][103]. ETEC strains may possesses one or more nonfimbrial adhesins (recently reviewed by Fleckenstein et al [104]).…”
