Prevalence of first-degree atrioventricular block and the associated risk factors: a cross-sectional study in rural Northeast China

Abstract: Background: First-degree atrioventricular block (AVB) has traditionally been regarded as a benign condition but recent studies have challenged this conception. Prevalence of 1-2% have been reported in developed countries in Asia. However, no epidemiologic studies have established the prevalence of first-degree AVB in developing countries. The aim of the study was to investigate the prevalence of first-degree AVB in rural northeast China and identify the associated risk factors. Methods: This cross-sectional st… Show more

“…There is only one study investigated the prevalence of first-degree AV block in China prior to our study. However, this study only focus on the residents aged ≥ 40 years in rural Northeast China [ 8 ]. Our study is the first study investigated the prevalence of first-degree AV block among adults aged ≥ 18 years across mainland China (except Tibet).…”

“…The prevalence of first-degree AV block was reported to be 2% among Finnish general population aged 30–59 years (mean age, 44 years) [ 5 ] and 1.6% among Framingham general population aged ≥ 20 years (mean age, 47 years) [ 3 ]. Besides, in Asia, it reported to be 1.9% among Japanese general population aged 30–95 years (mean age, 49.9 years) (PR interval greater than 0.22 s) [ 14 ] and 3.4% among residents aged ≥ 40 years (mean age, 59.8 years) in rural Northeast China [ 8 ]. In our study, the prevalence of first-degree AV block was 0.68% which is relatively lower than those above-mentioned studies.…”

“…First-degree AV block is not only the most prevalent among the three subtypes but also the most benign and amenable to treatment [ 23 ]. There were no mortalities in this subgroup of AV blocks.…”

“…Bradyarrhythmias are rare in children and generally asymptomatic. First-degree heart block, recorded on ECG as a PR interval prolongation 0.2 seconds and more, is considered a benign finding in children with a prevalence of about 1%; although uncommon, it can be complicated by atrial fibrillation [Cheng S, Keyes MJ et al 2009-Zhi Du, Liying Xing, et al 2019. The incidence of sudden death in children is about 0.8-6.2 per 100000 live births and 65% of these deaths result from cardiac causes [Robert M. Kliegman, MD, Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics 20th edition 2016].…”
