“…In a study examining vegetables and fruits collected from four local markets in southern Ethiopia, the frequency of Ascaris lumbricoides was 20.8% [25]. Furthermore, in Nigeria, the frequency of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs was 41.1% and hookworm eggs (Strongyle type) was 8.9% in 124 vegetable samples [26]. Comparatively, the rate of Ascaris lumbricoides eggs (9.1%) was lower than that observed in these studies, while the frequency of Strongyle type eggs (7.5%) was similar to the mentioned studies.…”

“…Half (50%) of published works identifying parasitic contamination of vegetables and fruits found S. stercoralis upon leafy, rough-surfaced vegetables such as lettuces, cabbage, celery, spinach, and carrot [30,31,32,33,34,35,36,37]. The sample sizes for fruit and vegetable-based studies ranged from 36 to 1130, with prevalence ranging from <1% to 46%.…”

“…The rough nature of green, leafy vegetables surfaces means that adhesion of parasitic larvae and eggs occurs easily when these vegetables are either washed with contaminated water or come into contact with contaminated human fecal-based fertilizers (i.e., night soil) [30]. Studies identified S. stercoralis contamination most frequently within leafy, rough-surfaced vegetables such as lettuces, cabbage, celery, spinach, and carrot [30,31,32,33,34,35,36,37]. This correlation may be due to these vegetables growing close to or in the ground, which may lead to increased contamination from fertilizers [78,79].…”

“…In Nigeria, helminth infection is still on the high side hence works conducted by Karshima, 2018 revealed over 54.8% rate in 19 states (Karshima, 2018). Benue state is one of the states in Nigeria with high burden of tropical diseases, especially helminth infections (Tyoalumun et al, 2016, Amuta et al, 2017Zakki et al, 2019) Helminth infections have negative impacts on child development, malnutrition and retained cognitive function and learning ability. It also results to anaemic conditions.…”
