Prevalence of high-risk human papillomavirus cervical infection in female kidney graft recipients: an observational study

Abstract: BackgroundImmunosuppressive therapy protects the transplanted organ but predisposes the recipient to chronic infections and malignancies. Transplant patients are at risk of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cervical cancer resulting from an impaired immune response in the case of primary infection or of reactivation of a latent infection with human papillomavirus of high oncogenic potential (HR-HPV).MethodsThe aim of this study was to assess the prevalence of HR-HPV cervical infections and CIN in 60… Show more

“…Notably, HBV infection has previously been found to be a risk factor for any‐ and high‐risk anal HPV infections in liver transplant recipients . Of note, the presented prevalence rate seems slightly lower than that reported previously for kidney transplant recipients probably due to older age of the patients and the lower number of tested HPV genotypes. Moreover, this may also be related to lower pretransplant sexual activity of liver transplant recipients as compared to general population and less functionally impaired kidney transplant recipients.…”

“…In contrast to a large number of reports on cervical HPV infection in renal transplant recipients, the population of liver transplant recipients remained markedly understudied. To the best knowledge of the authors of this manuscript, only a single previous report addressed this issue under a setting of liver transplantation .…”

“…65 However, there are studies that report low or similar prevalence rates of HPV cervical infection in RTRs and the general population. 66,67 Further studies with larger numbers and longer follow-up with new molecular assays for detection of the different HPV subtypes are needed to show the prevalence of HPV infection in RTR.…”

“…Although data on the prevalence of HPV infections in RTRs are scarce, an evident increase compared to healthy immunocompetent individuals has not been found in previous studies (6)(7)(8). Therefore, it is assumed that the elevated risk for developing HPV-related lesions after renal transplantation mainly results from the declined cell-mediated immunity caused by the use of immunosuppressive therapy.…”
