Prevalence of HIV-1 drug resistance in Eastern European and Central Asian countries

Abstract: Background Eastern Europe and Central Asia (EECA) is one of the regions where the HIV epidemic continues to grow at a concerning rate. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) coverage in EECA countries has significantly increased during the last decade, which can lead to an increase in the risk of emergence, transmission, and spread of HIV variants with drug resistance (DR) that cannot be controlled. Because HIV genotyping cannot be performed in these countries, data about HIV DR are limited or unavailable. Objectives … Show more

“…These patients did not have any other pDRMs. The L74I [ 11 , 12 , 13 ] was found in 164 of 176 (93.3%) A6 isolates ( Figure S3D ), which is in line with previous findings in the sub-subtype A6 [ 42 , 44 ], and in the two B/A6 URF ( Table S2 ) from Ukraine.…”

“…A high prevalence of the L74I mutation (93%) was found in the IN gene of Ukrainian A6 strains, consistent with earlier data [ 42 , 44 ]. A once monthly or bimonthly injectable combination of the INSTI CAB and the NNRTI RPV has resulted in confirmed virological failures.…”

“…Many IDPWID in our sample initiated IDU after the beginning of the conflict (30.2%), half of those (48%) started injecting after they reached Odesa. Substance use amongst forcibly displaced people as a coping mechanism following conflict, violence, and migration stress is well documented in current literature [30] and will require a special focus in Ukraine, particularly in regions that are currently occupied by Russia where drug use is criminalized (34). While these data are subject to reporting biases, we expect these to be low in our sample, as is often the case for those for whom the recall events were more emotional or marked a transition point in their life, like war or forced displacement events for IDPWID [32].…”
