Prevalence of HSV1/2 Congenital Infection Assessed Through Genome Detection on Dried Blood Spot in Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Abstract: Our negative finding is in agreement with other studies that failed to demonstrate a definitive role of HSV on the onset of ASD. Further investigation of congenital HSV prevalence in larger and more powerful studies is needed to undeniably discard a role of such virus in the etiopathogenesis of ASD.

“…In particular, interleukin-6 is higher in subjects who have contracted the infection and, unfortunately this event is related to a worse outcome [12]. Moreover, authors have hypnotized how viral infections and a dysregulation of the immune system could play a role in the etiopathogenesis of ASD [13,14] and how a higher interleukin-6 concentration is related to a worsening of restrictive and repetitive behaviours [15].…”

“…It is essential to understand the frequency of herpes simplex virus antibodies in individuals with ASD to clarify the possible link between viral infections and ASD. This knowledge is also important for guiding therapeutic management approaches and preventive measures [10].…”
