Prevalence of human T-Cell lymphotropic virus type 1 and 2 among patients with malignant hematological diseases in South Chile

Abstract: Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type 1 and 2 (HTLV-1/2) are oncogenic retroviruses linked etiologically to human diseases. In Chile, these viruses have been studied in ethnic populations, or patients diagnosed clinically with HTLV-1 associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis, but have not been studied in patients with malignant hematological diseases. The aim of this study was to determine the seroprevalence and viral prevalence of HTLV-1/2 among patients with malignant hematological diseases. Eighty-e… Show more

“…Miyagi et al (2002) found a HTLV-1 prevalence of 26.1% in 88 cases of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in Japan. Barrientos et al (2005) in southern Chile found an HTLV-1/2 viral prevalence in patients with malignant hematological diseases 18%, and in chronic lymphoproliferative disorders 27% (Barrientos, 2005). The overall HTLV-1 prevalence rate found in our study group is greater than that seen in some studies but is closed to the others.…”

“…The median age of diagnosis was 33 yrs (2-92 yrs), with 50% of HTLV positive patients being 30 yrs or younger. No ATLL assignation was given in this study [273]. Multiple cases of TSP/HAM are also reported from Chile [460][461][462][463], but, contrary to ATLL, TSP/HAM occurs in Caucasians, in mestizo and Chilean Amerindians.…”

“…Miyagi et al found an HTLV-1 prevalence of 26.1% in 88 cases of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in Japan ( 26 ). The prevalence rate of HTLV-Ι and HTLV-II infections was 18% in southern Chile in patients with malignant hematological diseases, and 27% in patients with chronic lymphoproliferative disorders, as Barrientos et al reported ( 27 ). Monavari et al reported that the prevalence of HTLV-Ι among patients with malignant hematological diseases in Tehran was 12% ( 28 ).…”
