Prevalence of Bartonella species DNA and antibodies in cats (Felis catus) submitted to a spay/neuter program in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Abstract: The prevalence of Bartonella species DNA and antibodies for Bartonella henselae were studied in 40 clinically healthy cats (Felis catus, Linnaeus 1758) submitted to a spay/neuter program in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Additionally, the prevalence of Bartonella species DNA was investigated in the fleas found parasitizing the subject cats. For this purpose, blood samples were obtained from all cats, and DNA extraction was performed on the blood, and blood clotted samples, as well as on pools of fleas obtained from t… Show more

“…Most cats from an animal shelter in city of Vassouras, RJ were infected (97.3% PCR-positive) (Souza et al 2010). Recently, B. henselae DNA and antibodies to Bartonella spp were detected in 42.5% and 47.5% of cats, respectively, undergoing neutering or spaying in RJ (Crissiuma et al 2011).…”

“…Recently, a seroprevalence for Bartonella spp of 35.7% was observed among cats belonging to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) antibody-positive individuals . In addition, Bartonella spp have been molecularly detected in cats from the states of Rio Grande do Sul (RS) (Staggemeier et al 2010) and Rio de Janeiro (RJ) (Souza et al 2010, Crissiuma et al 2011). There are few studies addressing the occurrence of Bartonella spp in humans in Brazil.…”

“…Furthermore, Bartonella spp. DNA was detected in 17 out of 40 clinically healthy cats that were treated in a spaying/ neutering program in the city of Rio de Janeiro, state of Rio de Janeiro (CRISSIUMA et al, 2011). Recently, B. henselae DNA was detected in two out of 46 apparently healthy cats (4.3%) that were sampled in Jaboticabal, state of São Paulo (DE BORTOLI et al, 2012).…”

“…Although in Brazil canine population is still bigger than cats, an increase in cat population has been noticed [12]. In Brazil, there is a wide variation in the prevalence of Bartonella spp DNA in domestic cats, ranging from 0.5% to 97.3% [13][14][15][16][17][18][19]. Hence, the aim of this study was to detect the presence of Bartonella spp.…”
