Prevalence of Salmonella in chicken carcasses in Portugal

Abstract: During 1986-87 57% of 300 chicken carcasses yielded salmonellas where tested by a swabbing method. Serotypes isolated were Salmonella enteritidis (66%), Salm. agona (12%), Salm. newport (6%), Salm. saintpaul (6%), Salm. derby (4%), Salm. typhimurium (3%), Salm. bardo (1%), Salm. ohio (1%) and untypable (2%). The results are compared with those of avian and human salmonellosis registered in Portugal during the same period.

“…Salmonella Enteritidis serovar was found to be predominant from 25.58% to 82.23% of isolates. Similar prevalences of S. Enteritidis isolated from chicken carcasses have been reported previously by the other authors (Machado and Bernado, 1990; Beli et al., 2001; Dominguez and Zumalacarregui, 2002; Capita et al., 2003). However, investigators from Japan (Limawongpranne et al., 1999) detected that Salmonella Blockley, S. Hadar, Salmonella Bredeney were predominant in broilers chickens, meanwhile S. Enteritidis was detected only in 0.9% of samples.…”

“…The total rate of Salmonella contamination of broiler carcasses was 11.8%, which is considered high, The Codex Alimentarius established 0% contamination in 25 g of analyzed food, including poultry meat and eggs (Santos et al, 2000). This percentage is lower than that found by Santos et al (2000), with 32% of contamination; by Machado & Bernardo (1990), with 57% of contamination; by Plummer et al (1995), with 23%; and Arvanitidou et al (1998), with 69%. Our results are consistent with the percentage verified by Sharma (1992), with 9.21% of contamination of broiler carcasses.…”
