Prevalence of Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Depression in Fibromyalgia

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to determine the point prevalence of depressive symptoms, using the PRIME-MD questionnaire, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), while comparing the Rome II to the Rome I criteria, in patients with fibromyalgia (FM) and rheumatologic controls in an outpatient setting. The prevalence of IBS in FM patients (n = 105) was 63% by Rome I and 81% by Rome II criteria. The prevalence of IBS in controls (n = 62) was 15% by Rome I and 24% by Rome II criteria (FM vs. control; P < 0.001). Depre… Show more

“…In another study, there was a high prevalence of intestinal constipation in MPS patients, which was consistent with the data found in the literature that reported a frequency of constipation that ranged from 42% to 63% in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain [11,38]. Results similar to those found in this sample were also found in a study conducted by Helfestein Jr. et al [11], that involved patients with fibromyalgia-type musculoskeletal pain, wherein the most frequent IBS subtype was constipation-predominant, resulting in a 60.5% prevalence of constipation among all patients in the study.…”

“…Recent epidemiologic surveys have reported the prevalence of depression in fibromyalgia between 22-55% depending on the scale used (22). In the present study, we found that BDS was associated with sleep disturbance and total subgroups of PSQI.…”

“…Those with FMS have been found to have elevated rates of major depression when compared to the general population which range from 20 to 60% in clinical samples from the US [11][12][13] and Europe [14][15][16][17][18] to 26% in US community-based studies [2]. The risk ratio of FMS and major depression in the US has been reported to be between 2.8 and 2.9 for males and females [9], and the odds ratio of co-occurrence between major depression and FMS when compared to matched controls with rheumatoid arthritis to be 2.7 [19].…”
