Prevalence of left ventricular hypertrophy detected by Cornell voltage‐duration product in a hypertensive population

Abstract: Almost one-quarter of hypertensive patients who attended outpatient clinics in Spain had LVH detected by CorP. The CorP criterion appears to be a useful method for detecting LVH in general practice.

“…The risk imposed by LVH is not totally explained by development of CAD, but regression of LVH with BP control is associated with reduced risk of CVD, especially development of HF. 280 ECG LVH was present in 23 281 Myocardial fibrosis and diastolic dysfunction precede LVH development in hypertension. 282 In the LIFE study, regression of LVH was associated with a 36% reduction in the rate of new HF, 283 and BP lowering improved diastolic function.…”

“…The risk imposed by LVH is not totally explained by development of CAD, but regression of LVH with BP control is associated with reduced risk of CVD, especially development of HF (280). ECG LVH was present in 23.4% of 782 patients (mean age 66 years, BMI 28.2 kg/m 2 , baseline BP 155.7Ϯ17.7/90.8Ϯ10.6 mm Hg), and predictors of LVH were age, male sex, and grade II hypertension (281).…”

“…21,22 In the present study, both VDP criteria detected LVH more frequently than classical voltage criteria, regardless of the presence of diabetes or other conditions, such as metabolic syndrome, in accordance with other studies performed in hypertensive populations. 5,9,16,17 LVH is common in hypertensive populations. Its early detection and treatment are essential in clinical practice, not only because LVH regression is associated with a marked improvement in cardiovascular prognosis, but also because it may reduce some potentially related complications.…”

“…1,2 Hypertension and diabetes are independent and additive risk factors for cardiovascular disease. 3 Left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH) is the most common target organ damage in the hypertensive population, 4,5 and diabetes is an independent stimulus for LVH. 6 Thus, the presence of diabetes markedly increases the prevalence of LVH in hypertensive patients.…”
