Prevalence of Leptospira spp. in Urban Rodents from a Groceries Trade Center of Medellín, Colombia

Abstract: Abstract. Leptospirosis is a widely distributed zoonosis, and rats are its most common source of infection. Our goal was to determine the frequency for Leptospira infection in rodents in a farmers market in the city of Medellin. We performed a descriptive transversal study sampling 254 rodents. Rodents were bled and killed, and kidneys samples were taken. Supernatants of macerated kidneys were cultured on Fletcher medium. Microagglutination tests (MATs) with 11 serovars were also carried out in rat serum, and … Show more

“…The pathogenesis of naturally-occurring leptospiral infection in rats has not been extensively studied and is complicated by a wide array of potentially confusing environmental factors that may also induce pathology in wild urban rats (11). The present study evaluated renal pathology in urban rats from a city where the prevalence of leptospiral isolation by kidney culture was approximately 20% (7). The finding of interstitial nephritis, however, cannot be attributed solely to leptospires since these rodents could also be exposed to other unknown environmental infectious agents that could cause interstitial nephritis (12).…”

“…Fifty milliliters of each macerated tissue sample was cultured in Fletcher semisolid medium followed by incubation at 28 to 30 °C. The cultures were examined under a dark-field microscope once per week during 4 months for positive or negative status (7). The other half of the second kidney was preserved at -70 °C for PCR Leptospira studies.…”

“…Factors associated with the prevalence of the disease, as established through research, include: occupational factors, hygiene conditions, frequent contact with rodents, and owning/working with animals, all of which considerably increase the risks of contagion [22][23][24][25][26]. Medical treatment depends on the severity of the symptoms.…”

“…Las trampas fueron armadas y ubicadas durante la noche y se revisaron muy temprano en la mañana siguiente, antes de que el mercado se abriera al público. El muestreo descrito fue empleado originalmente para un estudio de leptospirosis en roedores sinantró-picos de la plaza minorista de Medellín, cuyos resultados fueron publicados previamente (13).…”
