Prevalence of low back pain among intensive care nurses: A meta‐analysis

Abstract: Background Low back pain (LBP) is a ubiquitous health problem affecting most of healthcare staff. However, there have been not effort to derive robust prevalence estimates of LBP among intensive care unit (ICU) nurses. Aims and objectives To determine the prevalence of LBP among ICU nurses. Methods A systematic review and meta‐analysis was conducted. Five databases were searched: Web of Science, PubMed, MEDLINE (Ovid), Embase, and CINHAL databases. “…The incidence can be particularly high in certain professions; for instance, up to 76.0% of nurses in intensive care units may experience LBP. [24]. In China, the prevalence of LBP among workers ranges from approximately 42.7% to 72.0%, making it the leading cause of physical disability [13].…”

“…Several studies have found that the risk factors for LBP include lack of knowledge about ergonomics (Hakim and Mohsen, 2017), prolonged standing (Şimşek, Yaǧci and Şenol, 2017;Negash, Tadele and Ferede, 2022;Zewudie et al, 2022;Awosan et al, 2017), lifting heavy objects (Adesola Ojo et al, 2021;Awosan et al, 2017), and job stress (Vinstrup, Jakobsen and Andersen, 2020), and no research has been conducted on LBP in Asia using literacy studies. These studies focused only on the LBP period (Sang, Wang and Jin, 2021), LBP among healthcare students (Wong et al, 2021), and LBP in 12 random countries (Edwards et al, 2017). The purpose of this study was to identify the magnitude of low back pain (LBP) problems in healthcare workers (HCw) in Asia and to identify the risk factors.…”

“…In the operating room and nursing duties, conditions such as lifting patients, sitting and standing for long periods, excessive rotations of the torso, pushing or lifting heavy objects and equipment during surgery, are usual. Nursing is the most leading occupation in the prevalence of LBP and injury [ 14 , 15 ]. The results of a meta-analysis indicated that the prevalence of LBP in nurses was 76.0% (95% CI, 69.0–81.8%) [ 15 ].…”

The results of a meta-analysis indicated that the prevalence of LBP in nurses was 76.0% (95% CI, 69.0–81.8%) [ 15 ]. Therefore, the present study aimed to determine and compare the effects of exercise and TENS on chronic LBP of the operating room nurses (and nurse aides) of Imam Reza Hospital in Kermanshah, Iran.…”
