Prevalence of malocclusion in 4-6 year old Brazilian children

Abstract: The prevalence of malocclusion and the relationship with oral habits in Brazilian children from two public primary schools was evaluated. The sample was composed of 112 children with mean age of 61 ± 6.67 months. The results demonstrated the presence of malocclusions in 75.8% (n=85). The oral habits was related by 34.8% (n=39). The open bite was the most prevalent malocclusion in the studied population and the oral habits was the decisive etiological factor.

“…19,25,32,34 Studies show that the non-nutritive sucking habits are common among children in pre-school age. 6,23,40,41 These data have been ratified by the results found in this study. It was possible to see a reduction of habits prevalence with age increase, indicating a natural tendency of the children to cease such habits.…”

“…1,5,6,10,14,17,23,24,37,40,41,43 The presumable cause of anterior open bite in children with sucking habits is the vertical growth inhibition in the anterior part of alveolar process, but if the habit ceases during the growth phase, the possibility of spontaneous correction could be very satisfactory. 28 A gradual reduction in the prevalence of anterior open bite was observed, possibly due to occlusal development itself by the maturation of the individual, what facilitates the elimination of deleterious habits by the adenoids size decrease and by the establishment of a normal adult swallowing, due to the removal of external causal factors.…”

“…Several factors are involved in the etiology of anterior open bite. [3][4][5][6] Thumb sucking and increased vertical skeletal relationships are significant risk factors for the establishment of an anterior open bite. 6,7 Subjects with dentoskeletal open bite and sucking habits often have concomitant transverse discrepancies.…”

“…8 These lower prevalence should be attributed to the lower incidence of deleterious sucking habits in the Japanese ethnic group previously discussed, which some authors 5,19,20 believe The results of the present study showed statistically significant association (p=0.000) between the finger/pacifier sucking and anterior open bite (Tables 3 and 4) corroborating previous studies. 3,4,8,13,16,20,22 The relative risk observed for anterior open bite in children with deleterious sucking habits was 10 times higher (p=10.77) than those who did not have this behavior. Serra-Negra, Pordeus and Rocha Jr. 16 found a risk close to that (O.R.=14.1).…”
