Prevalence of Neisseria meningitidis carriage: a small-scale survey in Istanbul, Turkey

Abstract: Introduction: The human nasopharynx is the main reservoir of Neisseria meningitidis, and asymptomatic carriage is common. N. meningitidis one of the common causes of bacterial meningitis in Turkey, especially after the implementation of the national immunization program that includes conjugated pneumococcal and Haemophilus influenzae type b vaccines. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of meningococcal carriage and determine the leading serogroup, which may help authorities to adapt approp… Show more

“…As data were only available for one country, no overall conclusions can be drawn for the EM region as a whole. Asymptomatic carriage rates were 1.2 [ 27 ]–11.0% [ 31 ] in children (n = 4 studies), 1.3 [ 32 ]–10.3% [ 31 ] in adults (n = 3 studies) and 0.6 [ 29 ]–6.3% [ 31 ] in a mixed group of children/adults (n = 2 studies). Age ranges for children-only groups varied by study (0–10 years [ 27 ], 7–14 years [ 28 ], 0–14 years [ 30 ] and 10–17 years) [ 31 ].…”

“…A study conducted in Istanbul among those aged 0-79 years has reported that N. meningitidis was isolated from 0.6% of 1000 participants and all cases were MenB. 13 One study including young adults and adolescents (n = 1518) has observed meningococcal carriage rate as 6.3% (n = 96) [W: n = 64 (66.6%); B: n = 9 (9.4%)]. MenB carriage was 3.9% (n = 9) in the present study's departing cohort.…”

“…However, another study reported a higher carriage prevalence of 12.7–14.6% among undergraduate students in a university in the USA [ 45 ]. In two carriage studies in Turkey, a low prevalence of N. meningitidis carriage was observed among medical students and the community, both at 0.6% [ 40 , 46 ]. For P. aeruginosa carriage, only one subject (1%) in our study was positive, consistent with the low carriage prevalence reported among medical students in the Turkish study [ 40 ].…”
